Better to light a Candle - Greece
Better to light a candle than curse the darkness. You can can search for solidarity through despairing about the state of our planet, of violence, war and hate, of discrimination, pollution and poverty..or you can use that same energy to get up and Do something. Do something small, or something huge, as long as it is a something that is bigger than you. This year I had the honour of traveling with One Voice, to a small Greek island called Lesvos, where many thousands of refugees are stuck in an unmoving world with years of trauma, tragedy and loss following them and no ability to move forward. Trapped and at the mercy of strangers from a foreign land, they have no choice but to wait and hope for refuge. We offered to them the simple gifts of our hearts, our ears and all the paintbrushes and coloured paints we could find. There were times where the darkness and pain remained inescapable, but there too, were moments of hope, moments of warmth, moments of love and joy. Although I admit I still struggle with my own moments of helplessness, feeling like I can do nothing to really heal the wounds that scar so many beings on this planet I know that it is better atleast try. The beautiful humans I met in this little camp will always have a place in my heart and I only hope that it will not be long before the hearts and minds of our ‘leaders’ will open to them. I mean, what if the politicians across the globe for once came together not for business, war or sport- but for peace and rufuge for those have lost everything? Today, on world peace day, this is my greatest wish. There is always hope.
